I was walking back from lunch and came across a floral shop. It had several beautiful orchids for sale. Being Valentine’s Day, I justified an impulse buy.

I then walked into a coffee shop for a post-lunch latte. The barista saw me set the orchid down on the counter and said, “I think it’s going to be a good day,” with a smile and bow of her head as she let her eye contact linger flirtatiously.

“It’s optimism that ensures it will be,” I replied.

I love orchids, but they’re fickle plants. They’re easy to keep alive, however, they require perfect conditions to bloom.

When I was in Hawaii last week, I saw more types of orchids than I had ever seen before just growing in the wild. I thought of the potted orchid from my and Arthur’s wedding sitting in our kitchen window sill with healthy green leaves but no flowers to delight.

I think love is like an orchid. When we meet someone special, love just blooms naturally in the wild. When we enter into a relationship, we are transplanted and domesticated. To keep blooming, we have to create the perfect conditions. It takes work, but each season’s blooms are more plentiful and beautiful.

Today is my 9th Valentine’s Day with Arthur. He’s a great gardener.

As I’ve done in some previous elections, I’m sharing how I voted on various initiatives. I believe ballot measures are the worst form of legislation, so a measure must overwhelmingly convince me to vote for it.

California Propositions

Prop 30: No, should be changed by legislature

Prop 31: No, budgets should be reviewed annually

Prop 32: No, if corporations can do it, so should unions be allowed

Prop 33: No, there are legitimate reasons to not be insured

Prop 34: Yes, the death penalty is morally wrong and more expensive

Prop 35: No, courts don’t need this

Prop 36: No, should be changed by legislature

Prop 37: No, free market should decide, also scientists say no to 37

Prop 38: No, should be changed by legislature

Prop 39: No, too business unfriendly

Prop 40: Yes, for procedural reasons

San Francisco Ballot Measures

Measure A: No, pay for your own college education

Measure B: Yes, somewhat reluctantly

Measure C: No, the free market should control housing prices

Measure D: Yes, higher voter turnout

Measure E: Yes, taxing on revenue makes more sense than payroll

Measure F: Fuck No, Hetch Hetchy is vital California infrastructure

Measure G: Yes, corporations are not people
